Canadians Spending More This Holiday Season?
Despite uncertainty over the economy, and many reports that tend to point otherwise (at least in the U.S.), a recent poll by Scotiabank (conducted by Harris/Decima) claims that Canadians plan to spend more this holiday season compared to last.
CES 2008: Industry Comes Together at Canada Night
With all the meetings and demonstrations, it's nice to have a night of fun and (hopefully) relaxation. Canada Night 2008, our gathering of Canada industry members (and their U.S. and international counterparts) was a great success last night. I must admit: with Vegas looking oddly quiet this year, I was expecting Canada Night attendance to be down. But judging from the packed Caesar's Palace ballroom and outer hall area, that certainly wasn't the case.
Sirius, XM Add Channels
While the two satellite radio providers in the U.S., Sirius and XM Satellite Radio, move forward with a merged company, their namesakes in Canada (which simply license the name from the U.S. counterparts) are continuing efforts to operate as separate companies. Both Canadian companies, Sirius Canada and XM Canada, have recently made adjustments to their individual programming line-ups, adding several new channels of both music and talk programming.
Satellite Radio Decision Appealed
A coalition of organizations released a letter today appealing to the federal cabinet the recent Canadian Radio-television Communications Commission (CRTC) decision to license satellite radio service in Canada. The license would permit two applicants, Canadian Satellite Radio Inc. (partnered with XM Satellite Radio in the U.S.) and Sirius Canada Inc. (partnered with Sirius U.S.) to offer their services in Canada, utilizing signals implemented by the two U.S. counterparts, which already cover all of North America. Various groups expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision last week, concerned that it does not offer protection to Canadian artists, nor follows provisions within the current Canadian Broadcasting Act.
