"Full HD" 1080p resolution has helped fuel plasma TV growth worldwide during the second quarter of 2008. According to DisplaySearch, a division of the NPD Group, plasma shipment units increased 1 per cent quarter-over-quarter (Q/Q) to 3.5 million units, but 54 per cent year-over-year (Y/Y). 1080p also helped to drive revenues up 28 per cent Y/Y and six per cent Q/Q. The results show that 1080p now accounts for 21 per cent of all plasma shipped.
More than 70 per cent of all 1080p plasmas shipped were from Matsushita (Panasonic), which also enjoyed a 7-point revenue share jump to 36.8 per cent, representing 23 per cent Y/Y growth. Panasonic was also the only supplier of 1080p plasmas at the popular 42" and 46" screen sizes. On the smaller size of the scale, however, things are declining. DisplaySearch reports a decrease of 25 per cent in 32" plasma shipments during the quarter, led mainly by weaker demand and increasing inventory in China.
"As the 1080p penetration of 40"-plus LCD TVs rises to 72 per cent in developed countries and 47 per cent in emerging regions in Q1'08, it is important for PDP panel makers and PDP TV brands to be competitive in 1080p, especially in 50" and larger size categories," explains Hisakazu Torii, Vice President of TV Market Research at DisplaySearch.
Samsung enjoyed second spot with 31 per cent market share, followed by LG (24 per cent), Hitachi (4.8 per cent), and Pioneer (3.3 per cent). While Hitachi was the only other company to experience Q/Q share growth, it was also the only company to display a Y/Y decline. Y/Y, Samsung exhibited the most growth at 49 per cent, followed by LG and, surprisingly, Orion, which currently has just 0.1 per cent of the market share.

I'm glad. The main reason why LCD's are so popular is because they are available in just about every size. They dominate the 42 sizes because few retailers even carry it. Plasma technology rocks LCD. Once you've watched TV on a good plasma, you'll never want to buy an LCD. Just my 2 cents... Detail rendering and screen uniformity matters to me

21% of a market share of only 16-17%. of plasma overall..didn't you guys publish an article a week ago clearly indicating LCD is dominant?..I guess when someone pays the bills..you will as a magazine whore yourself for the cash..NPD's.. fledgling Intelect Canadian division that deals with consumer electronics no longer exists because canadian manufacturuers wouldn't buy the service..so this is all out of the USA...IF you really crunch the numbers you will see their data is very inaccurate and should only be used as one small indicator of the overall trend..they do collect pos data from retailers..and so call "clean the data...the industry is beginning to catcxh on that the NPD data is bogus.

Hi Wally, The article last week was based on a study conducted by J.D. Power & Associates in the U.S. that found that retailers south of the border tend to recommend LCD over plasma TV technology when they're looking for a TV 40" or larger. It did not cite any sales figures, nor claim one technology over the other. I am not sure if this is the one you're referring to. As for the data provided for this article, you are certainly free to agree or disagree with it.
