According to a recent study by Futuresource Consulting, the worldwide headphones market is expected to experience serious growth between now and 2016. This year, the market will reach US$6 billion in value, a 20% increase compared to 2011.
In terms of unit sales, Futuresource is predicting that more than 260 million headphones will be sold in 2012, up from the 228 million units moved last year. The consulting firm predicts that sales figures will continue to rise over the coming years, and that 330 million headphones will be sold in 2016 alone.
Right now, notes Futursource, in-ear headphone priced under US$25 account for 60% of total unit sales. Last year, over-ear headphones accounted for 16% of overall headphone sales.
Sony, Philips, Sennheiser and JVC are said to be the front-runners in terms of overall unit sales.
Such trends as the popularity of smartphones and tablets, fashion-friendly designs, as well as celebrity endorsements, are just some of the reasons why headphones will be found upon, or in the ears of a growing number of consumers for years to come.
