Toshiba Adds Two New Tablet PCs

Toshiba's Information Systems Group, a division of Toshiba of Canada Ltd., has announced two Portégé M780 Tablet notebook computers. Buyers can choose between a model with a 320GB hard drive for $2,349, or a model with a 128GB solid-state drive for $2,549. The solid-state drive offers greater durability, faster boot time, quicker data access and increased battery life due to 33 per cent lower energy consumption.

Both models have swiveling 12.1-inch LED-backlit LCD screens with anti-glare coating, and allow input from fingertips, digital pen and keyboard. They also feature Windows 7 Professional and take advantage of the operating system's touch capabilities. Users can scroll through Web pages and documents with the touch of a finger.

Both computers are powered by Intel's Core i5-520M 2.40GHz/2.93GHz processor. They have 4GB of DDR3 memory, built-in modem, LAN, 802.11a/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, webcam and digitizer/touchpad. Intel's Active Management Technology makes it possible to remotely configure, diagnose, isolate and repair these PCs. Toshiba says Intel's Turbo Boost Technology and Hyper-Threading Technology allow users can run several applications simultaneously and still maintain system responsiveness.

The Portégé M780 notebooks are able to consolidate multiple IT environments for a single server or workstation for improved efficiency. This reduces the risk of down time and lowers the costs that would otherwise be required for utilization of the notebook.

Both models feature a fingerprint reader for signing on, a spill-resistant keyboard that can withstand up to 100mL of liquid, shock protection for a drop of up to one metre, and an anti-theft protection timer. They are covered by a three year limited international warranty.

The new computers meet the requirements of the EnergyStar 4.0 standard and are EPEAT Gold certified. They are also RoHS-compatible, because of their restricted use of lead, mercury, cadmium and other hazardous substances. The units are made with reduced compound materials and minimal natural resources. Weight and volume of packaging is reduced at the distribution stage, while lower power consumption at the usage stage saves energy. At the end of life stage, the notebooks are easily dissembled for product recycling.
