Telus will be launching its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless service on Friday. The initial offering will kick off in 14 metropolitan areas across Canada.
Customers in Halifax, NS, Montreal and Quebec City, QC, Yellowknife, NWT, Edmonton and Calgary, AB, and Vancouver, B.C. will all have access to the service. Those in Toronto (and the GTA), Kitchener, Waterloo, Hamilton, Guelph, Belleville, and Ottawa, ON, will also receive access to Telus' 4G LTE once it's available.
The company notes that it plans on rolling out more 4G LTE coverage throughout the year, and hopes to have it available to more than 25 million Canadians by the end of 2012.
The Telus 4G LTE network supports manufacturers' rated peak download speeds of up to 75 Mbps, with an extended average of 12-25 Mbps. What's more, if Telus customers travel out of a 4G LTE area, they will move seamlessly into the 4G network, without any disruption of service.
Telus devices that can experience the full capabilities of its 4G LTE network include the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE tablet, the LG Optimus LTE smartphone, or the Novatel Ovation MC679 4G LTE Mobile Internet Key, which will be available as of February 10 as well. When released on February 14, the Samsung Galaxy Note will also be able to support Telus' 4G LTE network.
"Our commitment is to offer the best customer experience and we have followed through by launching a 4G LTE network with broad coverage in many communities across Canada," says Eros Spadotto, Telus Executive Vice President of Technology Strategy and Operations. "We're listening to our customers and working hard to give them clear and simple service terms with no surprises. Consistent with this approach, our current rate plans will apply to our 4G LTE customers. We are not introducing a new rate plan or charging a premium to enjoy our new network."
