Shaw Direct will soon be offering a new HD PVR to its customers that boasts an ample 320 GB hard drive, along with Smart PVR Technology, which adds a number of useful functions, including the ability to record two programs while watching a recorded show; and set a recording to begin early and end late.
Available starting September 1, the Advanced HD PVR will allow for recording up to 175 hours of standard definition programming, or up to 45 hours of high-definition fare. Customers will be able to view what's on for the next 14 days via the updated on-screen guide.
The unit, which is much smaller than a typical PVR (at just 10.5" wide and 8.5" deep; 2" high), allows TV watchers to set a recording to begin early or end late in order to compensate for the program running overtime; especially useful for sporting events or live shows. The Smart PVR feature also allows you to choose to record just new or all episodes of a show in HD, SD, or even 3D (once more programming becomes available); and even set the priority of the recordings, to ensure that a favourite show doesn't fail to record because you run out of room while a low-priority show manages to make the cut because it aired earlier, for example.
A new search feature makes it easier to find desired programs; and channels you aren't subscribed to can be set to be hidden from view. The PVR also boasts a new interactive menu bar that affords more information about shows, including star ratings and performers. "Favourite" lists can also be created for channels.
Shaw customers can purchase the new Advanced HD PVR outright for $399; or, if they qualify, rent it out for $15/mo. A detailed video that demos all of the features of the new PVR is accessible at http://www.shawdirect.ca/hdpvr.
