On the heels of rival XM Canada's announcement that it has created a version of its mobile app for the Android platform, Sirius has confirmed the same.
Sirius Canada has created an app for Android-powered devices that, like the XM app, affords access to more than 100 of the satellite radio providers' channels, including a selection of commercial-free music, sports, talk, entertainment, and comedy. It works over both WiFi and 3G, and, similar to XM, Sirius will offer a 14-day trial for customers to try out the app before signing on.
However, the Sirius app has one advantage over XM: existing subscribers can download it and stream tunes for no additional cost. For those who aren't already subscribed to Sirius, or aren't interested in a full-fledged subscription, a standalone Sirius online subscription is $14.99, and can be accessed on a computer or through a smartphone, but not via a separate receiver. Currently, a promotion is affording a Sirius online subscription for $45 for six months, which represents a 50% discount. XM's standalone subscription for Android, or iPhone or BlackBerry, is $7.99/mo.
The free app is downloadable at www.sirius.ca/android.
Both Sirius and XM offer apps for the iPhone (plus iPod Touch and iPad) and BlackBerry. While the two satellite radio providers have merged in the U.S. to create Sirius XM, the companies continue to operate independent of one another in Canada.
