Perfectly personifying the definition of irony, an electroluminescent night light distributed by BC Hydro has been recalled due to the potential risk of overheating, resulting in shock or fire.
Approximately 11,650 of the lights were manufactured and distributed as promotional products. Although they were distributed throughout Canada, the majority (8,000) of the units were sold within the province of British Columbia.
The lights, manufactured by Molenaar, LLC, are shaped as either a rectangle or a house, and feature the words "POWER SMART" on the front, along with the BC Hydro Web address, as depicted above. They glow green when plugged into an electrical outlet. Model numbers are 2017 and 2019, respectively, and can be identified by the following text: "71980 U.S.A.", which is molded into the back panel, just above the brass outlet prongs.
No affected models were sold after November 2009: all of those included in the recall were sold between September 2005 and September 2009.
According to Molenaar, the lights may contain faulty materials that can become hot to the touch, and consequently melt, resulting in possible shock or, worst case scenario, fire. The Electrical Safety Authority of Ontario (ESA) and Molenaar, LLC have four reports of night lights melting over the last four years, resulting in minor property damage. No injuries, however, have been reported.
If you discover that you have one of these lights, remove it from an electrical outlet immediately, and discard of it according to local and provincial regulations.
