New Sim2 Projo Calculation iPhone App Assists Integrators

Projector manufacturer Sim2 has jumped on the lucrative iPhone train, developing an app for the popular device (along with the iTouch) that can assist custom A/V integrators with the tedious calculation necessary for designing a projection system for their clients.

Called the SIM2Calc and selling for US$29.99, the app runs through necessary calculations like screen type and size, projector model, aspect ratio, throw ratio, geometry settings, viewing angle map, and luminance levels. Users can scroll through a number of common screen dimensions, or input their own dimensions. Then, the system will advise on the best spot to place the projector based on the screen size and aspect ratio. Or, enter the distance the projector will sit from the screen, and the app will calculate the ideal screen size based on this information. This, says Sim2, is particularly helpful in determining which lens type to use with the company's high-end projector models.

Using the luminance tool, the app will advise of the projector's light output, using the Screen Gain information and the projector's factory-declared lumens value. The angle tool assists in determining whether the viewing angle is correct for the intended seating position, in accordance with industry standards like THX and SMPTE.

Each section is organized as a tab in a logical progression, making it easy for an integrator to determine the proper set-up for each client. This takes into account industry standards, as well as best practices to achieve "reference video quality," says the firm.

"The SIM2Calc is designed to assist the user to accurately calculate, based on their customer's individual preferences or needs, instead of using generalized tables to find a suitable projector," explains Alberto Fabiano of Sim2. "This easy to use application provides a fast solution to be used anywhere."

Despite the fact that the app sells in U.S. funds, it will work with both imperial and metric units of measurement. Settings can also be adjusted for centimetres, meters, inches, and feet; and luminance is provided in both foot lambert and nits.

Sim2 products are distributed in Canada by Evolution Home Entertainment Corp. www.evolutionhomecorp.com
