Surprisingly, it only took three months. Google's Nexus One is now available for purchase to Canadians as an unlocked device via the new Google Web Store.
The new version of the Android-based phone operates via GSM SIM card, and will work on the Rogers Wireless network in Canada and AT&T in the U.S.
In addition to Rogers and AT&T, Google says that this new Nexus One "can be used with most GSM operators globally," as can the first edition of the phone. Bell Mobility says that the device is indeed compatible with its HSPA network as well.
The chance to legitimately purchase a mobile device, than pop in your SIM card, has typically been almost unheard of in Canada. But it's a step in the right direction, and hopefully one that the industry will continue to follow.
Price for Canadians remains US$529 without a contract or SIM card; and phones can be ordered with engraving on the back. Reportedly, engraved phones ship within 3 days. Available accessories include a desktop dock (US$45) and a spare battery (US$25).

Indeed jim. However, your comments prompted me to check with Google, and they have confirmed that that line was in reference to the previous-gen model. And this one does indeed work on 3G via Rogers (and Bell, as noted in the revised story) tells me it'll work on their network as well!

I agree they did not make their point well. They started by mentioning the limitation of the original model but did not make it crystal clear that they eliminated it.

Hi jim Google's official announcement says the following: "...there are some carriers that have different 3G frequencies, such as AT&T in the US and Rogers Wireless in Canada, so users with these SIM cards can only access 2G or EDGE networks on their Nexus One..." I will certainly verify this with them, as perhaps it can be misinterpreted (indeed, their only headline cites 3G for AT&T). But this information came right from the horse's mouth! Indeed if anyone out there has tried it, do let us know whether you're able to connect via 3G.

Google seems to think it is 3G. From their site:Compatible with 3G on AT&T (U.S.) and Rogers Wireless (Canada).
