D-Link Launches Wireless 802.11n Access Point for SMBs

D-Link's new DAP-2590 AirPremier N dual band access point is specifically tailored to the small and medium-sized business market, offering features like improved bandwidth and coverage, multiple operation modes, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities.

Housed in a rugged, plenum-rated metal chassis, the device adheres to strict fire code, meaning that it can be easily placed in air passageways or other utility spaces where power outlets might not be accessible. The unit comes with three detachable antennas, offering maximum wireless signal rates of up to 300 Mbps in either the 2.4 or 5 GHz bands. It also boasts D-Link's WiFi Multimedia (WMM) Quality of Service features, which the company says makes it ideal for data, video, and voice applications.

"They are designed for the SMB looking for the benefits of a selectable dual-band AP while maintaining backward compatibility to 802.11a and 802.11g," explains Nick Tidd, Vice President of Business Development for D-Link Canada.

The DAP-2590 supports both Personal and Enterprise versions of WPA and WPA2 (802.11i) with support for a backend RADIUS server, and Microsoft Network Access Protection (NAP) that restricts access based on a client PC's identity and compliance with corporate governance. Additional safety measures include MAC address filtering, wireless LAN segmentation, disable SSID broadcast, rogue AP detection, and wireless broadcast scheduling.

The DAP-2590 also is equipped with multiple operation modes, including AP, wireless distribution system (WDS), WDS with AP, and wireless client, so it can be configured to optimize network performance.

Additional features include the ability to manage traffic volume, spanning tree protocol, and D-Link's AM Manager II software, which helps to manage across subnet boundaries. With the software, customers can also manage legacy devices, like the DWL-3200AP, DWL-8200AP, DWL-2700AP and DWL-7700AP, and even mix and match these models to be monitored at a central point.

D-Link's DAP-2590 802.11n access point will be available for an MSRP of $764.
