CRTC to Review DAVE Wireless Ownership

The Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) sent a letter to DAVE Wireless Inc., parent company to the Mobilicity brand, indicating its plans to review the ownership and control of the company.

Sent on March 5 to Stewart Lyons, Vice President, the letter states that the CRTC is responsible for "ensuring that Canadian carriers comply with the Canadian ownership and control requirements of the Telecommunications Act," and that the Commission will be conducting its "four-type review framework" to ensure that the company's ownership structure complies with all regulations.

It's unlikely that the CRTC will have any issues with DAVE's ownership, and the Commission even notes in its letter that its preliminary review indicates that the structure "appears to comply with the legal control requirements of the Act." And judging from the situation with WIND Mobile, whereby Canada's Industry Minister Tony Clement overturned the CRTC's decision to halt WIND from launching, a ruling otherwise may just get thrown out anyway.

Still, the CRTC is proceeding with a Type 2 review of the ownership and control of DAVE in order to, as the Commission claims, "determine its eligibility to operate as a Canadian telecommunications common carrier."

A final decision will be made public upon conclusion. The process will likely have no effect on DAVE's launch.
