Easy to overlook amid the 3D hubbub at CES 2010, were Panasonic's first SDXC Memory Cards. The new SDXC Memory Cards, the RP-SDW64GE1K (64 GB) and RP-SDW48GE1K (48 GB) are billed as Panasonic's largest-sized GOLD cards with Class 10 speed specification (that permits maximum data transfer speed of up to 22MB/s).
Although 64GB is an eyeball popping capacity by today's standards, the new format tops out at an astounding 2TB.
The snag is that only next-generation devices (camcorders, still cameras, and phones) will be able to accommodate the SDXC memory card, whose specifications were released to SD members back in April 2009. Snag number two relates to the suggested retail prices: at a tentative C$699.99 and $499.99, respectively, the cards are priced well outside the mainstream market, at least for now.
Besides the extra capacity, the format calls for increasing the bus interface speed up to 104 MB per second upon introduction (Panasonic says its new duo will hit the streets globally in February); and ramping up to 300 MB per second in the future.
Panasonic notes that a 2 TB SDXC memory card could store an estimated 100 HD movies (depending on the amount of compression) or 480 hours of HD recording; or 136,000 ‘fine-grade' photos. Faster bus speeds will enable "professional-level" recording in compact consumer camcorders and increase the number of frames shot in a second with SDXC cameras.
Panasonic adds that a new advanced Super Intelligent Controller helps to improve the reliability of the card and extend its lifetime. The new SDXC Memory Cards reportedly include a new technology designed to minimize accidental corruption caused by a power interruption, such as the Memory Card being removed while data is being transferred, and greater tolerance of temperature extremes: they're said to be reliable from -13°F to 185°F.
Every new Panasonic camcorder and digital still camera for 2010 will have an SDXC slot. That includes a trio of new camcorders announced at CES, the HDC-HS60, HDC-TM55, and HDC-SD60; and seven digital camera models, the DMC-FH20, DMC-F2, DMC-F3, DMC-FP1, DMC-FP2, DMC-FP3, and the DMC-FH1.
A handful of other (yet to be announced) digital camera models are expected in another month or two; but an SDXC Micro Four Thirds model isn't expected until somewhat later this year.
