Bell TV Aims to Out-Do Rogers in HD Channels; Wireless

Bell TV claims to offer the most high-definition TV channels in Canada, having just boosted its lineup to 100. Rival cable TV provider Rogers offers 72 HD channels at last count, 24 of which are free with the purchase of an HD box (Bell offers 23 HD channels free with its standard package.)

"Bell TV offers more high definition TV channels than anyone else in Canada," declares George Cope, President and CEO of Bell and BCE. "Reaching 100 HD channels is a significant milestone that both enhances our lead in the industry and supports our strategic imperative to leverage our wireline momentum here at Bell."

The latest addition to Bell's HD roster is AMC (also new in standard definition), which airs movies and popular primetime dramas like Mad Men. The channel will be available to Premium Movie theme package subscribers at no additional charge starting November 11. The HD version will be on channel 1281 and the SD on 293.

Additionally, Bell is expanding its on-demand online component to add two new children's programming channels: Family Channel and Playhouse Disney. Both will now be included as part of the Bell TV Family 1 theme pack subscription, allowing kids to enjoy shows like Hannah Montana and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse via the computer as well as the big-screen TV. The programs, which stream commercial-free, can be rewound, fast forwarded, played and paused, just like on TV (with a personal video recorder.) These channels will also be available on November 11.

But TV services aren't the only place Bell is aiming to snag more marketshare from Rogers: Bell is also poised to make some waves in the wireless GSM space. The carrier has confirmed that it will launch its new HSPA cellular network, to compete directly with Rogers (and Telus) on November 4. The network will reach up to 21 Mbps speeds; Rogers launched its 21 Mbps network in September in the five largest cities in Canada, with plans for expansion over the coming months. It will also afford Bell customers the ability to roam on GSM, UMTS, and HSPA networks in more than 200 countries; a prior limitation that has often given Rogers a leg up on CDMA carriers Bell and Telus. Both Bell and Telus will continue to operate their CDMA networks in tandem with the new HSPA ones for the foreseeable future.
