If you're addicted to PVR'ing programs like I am, Rogers Cable's latest product is targeted to customers like you. It's a small box that connects to an existing PVR to add an extra 500 GB of recording space.
Being a self-professed TV-lover, I absolutely cannot live without my PVR. There are often two desirable programs on at the same time, and when I'm not available to watch either of them, my PVR is set to record these shows for later enjoyment. Truth be told, more storage space would likely lead to much more recordings, like movies; especially if I knew there was enough storage space to warrant not having to "clean out" the hard drive every week or so.
The new device from Rogers, called the PVR Extender500, works with the company's HD PVR 8300, and will be available for $199 starting on November 24. The Extender500 connects directly to the high-definition set-top box, and affords up to 70 hours more of high-definition content, or 340 hours of additional standard-definition fare. Measuring a mere 15.5 x 20.3 x 6.4 cm, the device can easily sit atop the existing PVR/set-top box.
With the economy in its current state, more and more people are likely to replace nights on the town with cozy evenings at home. And with those nostalgic Christmas specials set to begin shortly, 500 GBs is ample room to record them all and then some!

To Eric I wondered how to set up the tetra and do you need special cables and what is an Esata enclosure? Many thanks. Sue

I like Bell's approach better. Any external hard drive (up to 750GB) can be plugged in to the 9242 PVR via a standard USB cable. the guide works much the same way as it does for the internal memory, and set up takes about 2 seconds. Also, you can add as many drives as you like for infinate storage. I picked up a 500GB hard drive for $65 on sale at a Box store, and I was up and running in no time!

I built my own too. The external drive does NOT get formatted if the power fails.

$199? Christine the self-professed TV-lover must make a lot of money doing just that if she feels that $199 is no skin off her back with the "economy in its current state". Sure, why don't I replace a night out on the town to save money by, well, spending money!?! Great idea (note sarcasm)!

Hi Sean, Christine the "self-professed TV-lover" here. Your note certainly made me laugh and yes, $200 IS skin off my back! BUT, if you consider a family of four going out to the movies, that's easily $100 per trip (taking into account tickets, overpriced snacks, gas to get there, etc.) So the $200 cost to stay in and watch recorded movies (or TV shows or what have you) on several occasions would certainly pay for itself over the long run. With that, I will give you that $200 is a bit steep for a 500 GB drive these days (especially with holiday specials coming up that will afford 1 TB drives for potentially even less than that!) But if you take into consideration consumers that aren't as tech-savvy as you, and don't know how to set up the PVR with a third-party storage drive, it might be worth the extra bucks for them to get the seamless, no hassle experience. Not to mention the easy tech support should anything go wrong.

That's right Howard K. I saw an ad in 24hrs and TechDirect(?) has a Samsung 500Gb brand new drive for $ 70. You can make your own extended drive buy buying a special PVR cable (not regular USB) to attach to a drive and both will set you back $ 75. I remember reading in a forum that when the power goes out so does everything in your extended drive. This does not make sense to me but I read that because it is encrypted and external the PVR will FORMAT IT AS NEW EACH TIME THE POWER GOES OUT.

Sorry, the total cost is about $ 95 and it is a special ESATA cable. http://discountechnology.com/SATA-Cable-External-Sata-1-to-eSATA-Cable-1m-3ft-Brand-New;jsessionid=0a010b441f43d893bcb3630946299fcfdf1f97bfc217.e3iKaNePch4Re34Pa38Ta38Naxr0 http://discountechnology.com/8300HD-eSATA-Hard-Drive-for-Scientific-Atlanta-8300HD-DVR-400GB I haven't used this tip so I don't know if it works.
